The Beginning of the End

Hey Everyone! It is my last post as a COJR3422 student, sad I know. This class has been a lot of fun though, and I’ve learned a lot.

I think my favorite assignment from this semester had to be the Instagram assignment. In this assignment the class had to share their Seton Hall story. It was fun to look back at all the memories I’ve had during my four years and SHU and it was also fun to see all of my classmates as well. I was able to see new things about SHU that I had never thought of and I was also able to bond with others over our similar posts. Although we all are students here we have all had our own unique experiences while being here.

My least favorite assignment was probably the live tweeting or anything that had to do with Twitter. I am not a huge fan of Twitter to begin with and rarely use my own. So using it was just not exciting for me. Although I am not fan, I did learn a lot about it that I didn’t know before coming into this class. For example I had no idea what a list was. I didn’t know why they were there or what they were used for and didn’t do my own research to find the answer either. But through the assignment we had making them I understand them and maybe when I occasionally use Twitter I will start using them more.

Before I started this class I thought I knew everything there was to know about social media. I mean I am 22 and use it on a daily, hourly basis so I didn’t think there was much for me to learn. But I learned so much. I learned about embedding, blogging, privacy in social media and so much more. I can see myself using all I learned not only in a personal setting but also a professional one. This was honestly one of my favorite classes I’ve taken at SHU and will have great memories of it.

Well, that’s all for now. Thanks for following me on my journey!

Stay fun, stay sassy and I’ll see you when I see you!

Who is Fake?

The term fake news has a life all of its own. You are constantly hearing people say “that’s fake news”, not only your friends but also people in higher up positions. But who is to blame for fake news?

Authors believe that the malpractice of social media is to blame for the spike in fake news circulation. Everyone can agree that due to social media we are all constantly connected at all times. If I decided that I was bored one day I could make up a crazy story, and if it went viral without anyone checking it people could believe it. And my ramification for lying? None because most of the time things are shared so much and so fast it is hard to say where the information originated from. That is to say unless I make up a serious fake story then the authorities could surely figure it out. But everyday non-scene isn’t something that is policed on social media. Which comes into the malpractice, because there are no rules at times people take advantage. If a true story is published you can put your own spin on it. This is why authors blame the spread of fake news on social media, because there are no rules.

What O’Neil meant when he said we “broke the internet” was that sometimes when things go viral, people stop what they are doing share and spread that information to everyone.

Some of the best practices that you can do to verify information that you see on social media is look it up yourself. If you see a tweet that there is a shark on the parkway. You know that information will also be on google. You have to be your own advocate when you hear things online. Check facts, check dates and see if the person who is writing the information is a legit account, or even a reporter. But if it is a fake account it’s best not to listen to what they are sharing.

I think the best way that public relations professionals and journalist can counteract the spread of negative fake news is to just put out your own and true information. There are so many trolls out there now-a-days that there is no way that you can combat all of the information that is put out there. But if you do hear something off make your own post. Tell your story and make sure the truth is coming from you.

Hope you learned something new today!

Stay fun, stay sassy and I’ll see you all next week!

Oh… True!

*FOR CLASS PURPOSES ONLY*

It is the moment we have been waiting for…… Yes i mean everyone! Khloe Kardashian and Tristan Thompson’s baby girl is finally here!!! We have been sitting anxiously on the edge of our seats since they announced they were pregnant back in December. And again when they announced they were having a baby girl, via Khloe’s baby shower photos on Instagram. Now, the wait has finally ended. On April 12th it was confirmed that True had made her debut into the world early that morning.

All seemed so good for Khloe. She finally was a mother, after facing years of trouble, which we all watched on her love to hate television show Keeping Up With The Kardashians and she was finally in a happy loving relationship. Again after watching her marriage to Lamar Odom fall apart in the weekly magazines. Sadly that was not totally the case. As Khloe was in Cleveland Ohio preparing to give birth to her first child, news broke of her boyfriend and father of her child, not only cheated but had been cheating during her entire pregnancy.

This was reported just a day after Khloe posted on Instagram a happy photo of the two expressing how excited and ready they were to meet their little girl.

We are ready whenever you are little mama 🦋

We were all rooting for Khloe. She has gone through some hard times over the past couple years and we thought that her happiness was finally here. Although, Khloe and Tristan seemed to have worked things out (or so it seems) due to the fact that he was allowed in the delivery room and Khloe also put out a comment “blaming the groupies” for her boyfriend’s infidelity (mhmmm). We continue to wish Khloe the best and are so excited to see how she will be as a mother. But also lets be honest we are equally excited to see what this bundle of joy looks like!

You’ve Been Curated!

This week in COJR3422 we are talking about curation and how it is used! What is curation you ask? Well when it comes to social media it is the collecting and organization of online content of a particular topic. This is important for journalists because content curation is made by brands and news organizations to connect more with their customer. If journalists have questions or want certain information they can look up the content and get what they need.

Now lets look and see how Twitter Moments are used by a news organization and by a brand. First, a Twitter Moment is where users can essentially make a slide show of tweets to showcase a moment in time.

This Twitter Moment is from Business Insider. This moment is super relevant to me, as I am senior and looking for a job. After watching the video posted by Business Insider you can see people’s thoughts and comments about what they thought of the video. This is super helpful because it opens the lines of communication to the Twitter world. Someone might share a thought or an idea you wouldn’t have thought of, but now you see what they have to say so your point of view could be changed. I think that they did a great job using this moment and as I said before it is very relevant to soon to be college grads, so it was a great time to post this specific article.

Although this Twitter Moment wasn’t shared by the brand itself, Super Heroic, a kids shoe brand was getting a lot of hype through this moment. Super Heroic was started by an ex-Nike designer and he makes children’s shoes themed by different superheros. I think this is such a fun and cool idea and would have never heard of the company if it weren’t for this Twitter Moment.

I think that both the news and brand moments worked the same and were both effective for the audience that they were trying to reach. I think though, for me at least, Twitter Moments aren’t used as much. So I’m not 100% sure if these moments are getting the outreach that they should. But what I have learned from this is to look into the moments more because there are a lot of things going on that I didn’t know about.

Back to curation, from a PR/Marketing stand point the benefits are really just getting the information out to your customer. That is the biggest benefit. A risk is that other people (trolls) can take your content and put their own twist on things and put it out to the public as your companies information. But just like anything in life without risk there is no reward.

Stay fun, stay sassy and I’ll see you all next week!

I’m Looking for SEO, SEM and Social Media!

Today we are going to talk about SEO, SEM and why they matter in the world of PR. SEO (search engine optimization) is a companies main marketing channel and SEM (search engine marketing) is a form of marketing that seeks to promote websites to increase their visibility on the web. Clients should care about SEO because that’s where a majority of their money is going to. They want people to be able to look up their company with ease, this is an organic way to get your company out on the net. It is one of the most useful ways to have people interact with them from an internet stand point.

Some strategies that clients can use to boost their search ranking is, one to pay, but to also use key words. If your company is for cat food you are going to use words on your website that would come up if someone were searching different cat foods on google. You wouldn’t be talking about what was going on BRAVO the night before. You would also want to have links to other sites that are related to yours so if a person isn’t necessarily looking for you website they will see that it is associated to the one they are looking at and that would lead them to yours.

If a client were to ask me to increase there likes on Twitter there would be a few ways I would have to measure the outcome. First, we would have to set a goal. How many likes would they like to get 20? 80? 150? Once that goal was set I at the end would be able to see the increase in likes from the beginning. I would then measure the awareness, engagement and other measures like that. If there is a Tweet that gets a lot of attention I would see why and what kind of attention it was getting. Also if we got new followers due to it being shared. I would then measure. See how the tweets did during my testing period. I would then repeat the experiment and make the changes needed to make it more productive for my client. With social media you are always doing this. There are always better ways to do something so experiments like this will always be going on even if the company is well established but it is a good way to learn about what your consumer wants and what they go for.

What is next for Disposable Media?

This week we are talking about disposable media! Something that has been around longer than some may think. Let’s dive a little deeper and see what this form of media really is.

What is disposable media? Disposable media is like a Snapchat, once you send a “snap” to a person they have a certain amount of time to view the image or message and then it disappears and the receiver will not longer be able to look at the snap.  This is different than other outlets such as Twitter and Facebook, where you post something and it doesn’t disappear unless you delete it. At that point people could have saved it, shared it or even taken screen shots of it so it never really goes away. When someone screenshots a snap though, you are notified of it which hinders a lot of people from doing so.

A lot of social media channels have adopted this method because, whether we like to admit it or not, there has been one moment or another when we have posted something to social media that we wish we could take back. With this form of media, in essence if you regret something after the fact it’s like it never happened before. It is a way to make social media a little more fun and carefree, unlike the other platforms.

Brands are able to use this effectively by posting what they are doing in real time. Kylie Jenner has a huge following on Snapchat. When she is launching a new lip color or eye shadow palette you know she will be posting about it with a cute filter. It keeps her fans engaged and wanting to know more and see more. It is also more personable than a Tweet or Facebook post because it is her talking to her fans rather than someone from her team writing a post.  Like this Huffington Post article says, people like to see the vulnerable side to people and by snapping yourself to your fans they feel a deeper more personal connection.

Disposable media isn’t just for the everyday person or celebrities though, journalists have also started to use this in their work. When they are the first people on the scene but the cameras aren’t there yet what are they going to use? Their phones! If they want to snapchat something that is going on they can do it right there, in real time. What could the problem with that be? You don’t have a script and sometimes you don’t have all the facts. If you are reporting on something that is going on and you start to report the wrong thing and share it, that may cause hysteria and although it might disappear people can still say, “well I heard it from this person’s snap and it was wrong”. That not only can cause harm to the people are a crisis but also the reputation of the journalist. So be careful what you share on stories.

Hope you learned something new today!

Stay fun, stay sassy and I’ll see you all next week!

Social Media > Class

In place of class we are doing a blog post. I will be talking to you about the social media outlet of Instagram and Pinterest. These forms of social media are some of the best known and well known forms that people use everyday. I personally look on my Instagram more than 15 times a day and try to post on it once or twice a week.

Instagram, is unlike any other form of social media. Instagram you post pictures only and you can add an caption if you want. This is different than Twitter and Facebook that are used for mainly posts rather than pictures. On Instagram you can also post videos and bommerages. Pinterest you pin other people’s pictures so it is usually never your original posts like on Instagram when it is your own original work.

On Social Media, such as Instagram, you are able to show your product if you are a brand. An add on to Instagram there are ways to look at the product and it links you out to the website. This is great for different brands because it is putting out information to the public about new products. For professional photojournalists since Instagram is so focused on pictures this is great because it is a main platform for pictures. A lot of people use it as well and it is really well known so it has a lot of outreach.

The problem with Instagram is there are a lot of fake accounts, which isn’t good for professional photographers because their work is used in other places and spread around and no one knows where it starts. This discredits the artist and their work because people don’t have to credit other people for the work that they take and use on their own profiles.

Photos and videos are super helpful when it comes to brands and their social media when it comes to public relations. It is great way again to get your products out and show what you have coming. Social media as a whole is just an asset for all brands. I think it does more good than bad. I works with personal brands public brands. It is good for the public to be informed of what is coming out and what a company is doing so that their consumers feel more attached to the product and want to continue to buy the brand and be apart of it. It’s also a great way to get feedback from the consumers because they can comment and let the companies know what they can improve on.

I think social media will only grow and evolve as the years go on and brands will only start to use it as more to help them expand their brand and help them with outreach to the public. Again, this is just as helpful for the brands as it is for the brands. They are getting a mutual benefiting relationship through social media and are both stay transparent.

When We Went Live.. #Dunkin vs #Starbucks

Hey everyone!

Last night Christina Simon and I went on a little adventure. We went live on Twitter to interview our fellow classmates on what coffee brand they liked, why and more.

The first person that we interviewed was Emily Osborn. Emily is a junior biology major and we talked to her while she was leaving Bounce and Trounce. Emily was interviewed by Christina. Christina first asked, “Do you like Starbucks or Dunkin?”, Emily answered with,” I like dunkin”. Christina then went on to ask why, Emily said, “the prices are more reasonable and Starbucks is way to expensive”, she also added, she uses the mobile app which makes her Dunkin experience faster and easier. Emily also talked about being able to gain points from the app which is just another reason she likes it so much. Emily also told Christina that she goes to Dunkin at least once a day if not more, not only does she like the taste, but as a biology major the caffeine in Dunkin’s coffee helps her start her day and stay awake during long study sessions. Overall, what we learning from Emily is that Dunkin tastes better, had better prices and is easily attainable with the Dunkin app!

I then found another student, Chrissy Sun. Chrissy is a senior graphic design major. She was also at Bounce and Trounce when I asked her to interview. My first question, like Christina was, “Do you like Starbucks or Dunkin”. Chrissy said that she preferred Dunkin over Starbucks. When asked why she said, “because it’s cheaper then Starbucks and I just prefer the taste”. I then asked if she noticed a difference in caffeine between the two and if that also effects her opinion, in which she replied that Dunkin’s caffeine keeps her up and focused more when she is doing her work (because midterms are slowly approaching :/ ) When asked if she used the mobile apps, Chrissy surprisingly didn’t know that either had apps. She then said now that she knows about the apps she is going to check them out and maybe even download them. What we got from Chrissy’s interview is that again Dunkin’s prices are cheaper, the taste and caffeine is better and although she didn’t know about the apps she is interested to learn more.

https://twitter.com/serafino_alyssa/status/968632690600640512

Our last interview we were to interview two students at one time. Christina was able to get Brian and Wonderful to participate in our Live video. When asked which they liked more, Starbucks or Dunkin, both Brian and Wonderful said Dunkin. When asked why they both had their own reasons. Wonderful said that he liked their green tea, he also said that the prices at Dunkin were better overall. Brian said he liked Dunkin because it is cheaper but says the taste in their teas (which he prefers) taste the same. Christina asked them both if they used the Dunkin app, while both knew about the app neither of them had ever used it but think it is a good idea and it also depends on what it can do for them. Again, from both Brian and Wonderful we saw that they both liked Dunkin over Starbucks because of mostly price.

What we were able to gauge about public opinion is that Dunkin is the more popular choice because of price, taste, caffeine levels and convenience.

This was a really fun experience because we were able to go out in our SHU community and talk to our fellow students about something that I think all of us have an opinion about. It was also fun to see what our classmates chose to ask others about too.

Stay fun, stay sassy and I’ll see you all next week!

Is Mobile Reporting the New Reporting?

Hey Everyone!

Tonight we will be talking about mobile reporting. Basically, mobile reporting is using ones mobile device (aka cell phone) as a use of reporting on an event. This is something that we do all the time. Even if it is not “real news” we are constantly sending our friends and families screen shots or pictures when we are out people watching.

Mobile reporting really comes in handy when something is happening in the moment and you need to get it out fast. Such as if you are the first one to the scene of an accident you can take a video, picture or audio, write a small explanation and then send it out. This information will then make its way on to the web and can even go viral.

What you first need is a cell phone (duhh mobile). Having apps on your phone to help with editing is also super helpful. But this form of reporting is very simple. You will also need a way to be able to get the information onto the web, which now a days isn’t hard to do both.

Professional new agencies really use this type of reporting as a tool. When something is going on in real time somewhere they are at and they don’t have a camera and crew they can do it all themselves. With their phone they are able to get their information down and send it out to their team to add to information that they might already have. This is a great help because people can be in the office and people can be out on the field working together to make a story come together.

Well got to get back to class, I think we are doing some live tweeting again. Stay tuned on what I come up with!

Stay fun, stay sassy and I’ll see you all next week!
